The popularity of these train sets can be attributed to several factors. One factor is that toy trains can be assembled and constructed. Children or adults who like to tinker with things and to construct objects make these trains very popular among them. This also helps young kids develop their minds, creativity, and critical thinking abilities.

Parents also love to buy trains for their children because it helps them teach their kids the importance of being patient, working hard, and making progress. It is very effective because trains need a long time to be assembled but after working hard, children are able to enjoy the results of their efforts.

Some children’s trains also come in colourful designs and interesting sounds that suit children of different gender and ages. For instance, they feature large colourful parts which are safe and attractive to the eyes for the very young children. They can build and construct the trains and they can also disassemble them quite easily without parents worrying of hurting themselves. Toy trains are not only boys’ toys but girls can also enjoy them as well. Train sets for girls usually come in bright girly colours and have girly designs like flowers or hearts and girl dolls.

Adults also like to collect toy trains such as wooden trains or the popular model Hornby trains. Wooden trains are popular because of their simplicity while Hornby trains are famous for their intricate designs and details. Hornby trains are made of state of the art metals and high quality clockwork machines. These are considered as collectibles and are sold to collectors in online shops or toy collectible shops.

For train collectors, their pastime sometimes does not have an explanation. They just feel that exhilarating rush when another train set was added to their growing collection. Just seeing them is enough.

It is also a fun toy because children can have a role playing activity as travellers and passengers which will make them develop their social skills and interaction with other children. It will also develop their imagination since they will make up places for their trains’ destinations and they will imagine scenes where the trains will pass.

It is really a fact that toy trains are very important part of everyone’s childhood memories. Even adults who consider themselves young-at-heart love to receive train sets for Christmas. Not only this, but trains can also teach children so many valuable lessons and virtue without them knowing it and without you making so much effort. This is the reason why little boys and girls and even adults love to have or collect toy train sets. It cannot be denied that toy trains have become an integral part of one’s childhood.

Before adding scenery to your HO or O scale model trains toys, first determine the theme, location and layout.

Theme: Consider the theme or purpose for the setting you want to achieve. Is it a passenger train, a military base, or some other setting? The location should be considered, such as if you want the train to travel through towns to and from its destination. Think about the era; do you want your trains toys to be vintage or modern? Your setting and scenery should reflect the overall theme of your train set. Keeping the scenery consistent with the era and theme will keep your train realistic looking.

Location: Decide where you want to display your model trains toys. You might build it on a shelf or countertop for more permanent mounting. You could create an intricate design in which your train runs through the walls (near the ceiling) of your house, traveling from room to room. A different town or factory could be in each room. (Of course, the downside to this type of track is chasing down derailments, but it would be an interesting hobby.)

Layout: After you know the theme and location, plan the layout for the track, terrain, structures and finally, the scenery. The scenery must work within the constraints of the space available and it should compliment your scale model trains. To get some ideas on what you can do with scenery, there are books available from hobby shops. Another source which is faster and cheaper is a Google search for ?train stations? or other related keyword phrases. When you find a real train station, then choose maps, then the Satellite tab and zoom in for a view of the scenery around a real station. You can model your station after that or use parts of it for your own design.

To get started with laying out the scenery, draw a rough sketch design on a piece of paper to get an idea of where you want to place different items. After you have a plan that you like, use a pencil to lightly draw directly on the surface of your layout, whether it is a plywood board or wherever the scenery will be positioned. Plan for height and depth based on the scale of your trains.

Use either construction foam (spray-on kind) or plaster to build hills. The spray foam insulation can be painted and cut to fit your style. Spray the foam on a working surface where you have room to work, away from your actual layout, shaping it to the bottom layer of the ?hill.? Trim the edges until you are satisfied with its look. Add more layers, spraying and trimming each time, until your hill is the correct height. Be sure the layers fit together. Once you are satisfied with the hill?s height and shape, glue each layer together with a product like Liquid Nails. Hold the layers together with toothpicks until dry. Once dry, you can glue the hill to your board, making it part of your scenery. Let this sit aside while you continue adding scenery.

Begin adding ground cover materials around the track. Your hobby store should have several sizes and shades available; a mix of colors and sizes will provide realistic settings for a wide variety of trains toys. If you will be painting or trimming any scenery near the tracks, be sure to cover the tracks with masking tape.

Decide the placement of trees, grass, and other ground covers before moving to the next step. Be sure you have marked the board with the location of each item.

When you are ready to use ground cover, brush an earth-colored brown paint onto an area a few feet square. Your ground cover will stick to the paint as the paint dries. Add some broken branches or more ground cover to enhance your scenery. Continue this process around the board, being sure to protect the tracks as you work.

If you added water to your scenery, be sure to check that the water flows easily, but doesn?t gush and therefore cause damage to your track. The complexity of your water scene determines how much containment you will need for the water. Simply adding a green paint with shimmers gives the illusion of a small pond.

Once the ground cover is all in place, it?s time to add your trees, animals, or other items to your scene. Be sure that purchased items are the same scale as your scale model trains. Your towns can include traffic lights, building, cars, people, and pets. Browse your local hobby shop or an online store for items that fit your theme, whether it?s early steam engine or modern supersonic trains.

Once you?ve mastered these simple scenery-building basics, you can add intricate designs, holiday-themed elements, and trees and scenery that reflect the change of seasons. As your train set expands, you can add detailed cities, construction sites, and other scenic items as you choose. Have fun with your designs. Take pictures, keep them in a photo album so you can see your progress, and have a record of your changes.

Although many of us may not realize it, a degree of caution should be used when working on a railroad model train set. A few safety measures taken will prevent cuts, burns and other injuries.

Working on a train layout usually includes the use of blades, paints that can be toxic and electricity. A healthy dose of common sense can go a long way in reducing potential hazards. You’ll want to keep your work area clean, your tools organized and incorporate safety goggles anytime you’re working on your train set. The fact is, you never know when tiny slivers of wood or other particles will become airborne with a target for your eye and face area. Electrical burns, although not common, are always a possibility and a dropped Exacto knife can easily result in minor cuts.

Another safety tip that’s worth mentioning is the importance of using the right tool for the task at hand. Certainly there’s no need to invest in every possible tool you could ever use in your railroad model hobby, but if you plan your projects, odds are, you’ll know what tools you’ll need in advance. Not only that, but buying tools a few at a time won’t put a dent in the budget you’ve allocated for your train set. By the same token, using dull blades is never a good idea and is unsafe. Regularly check any blades you’re working with to ensure they’re sharp – just do it in a safe manner.

If you regularly use glue in your railroad model, consider a water based adhesive such as carpenter’s glue. It’s durable enough for most projects and because it is water based, it’s less likely to be harmful than other chemical based adhesives. That said, carpenter’s glue is designed for use on wood projects. If you’re using plastic, you’ll need to consider rubber based glues. Consider Goo as it’s designed for model train set enthusiasts. Keep glue solvent nearby for those unexpected spills or the occasional and unintended sealing of your fingers to the project. Acetone is ideal for this purpose and is the primary ingredient in nail polish remover; however, it is a chemical and should be treated as such.

Finally, paints are a big part of train set collecting. They can release toxic vapors and thereby should be used in well-ventilated areas. You might wish to consider investing in filter masks for use while painting. They’re inexpensive but necessary to prevent inhalations that can be harmful to your lungs and general health.

Other tools of the trade, so to speak, include smoldering tools which can easily cause burns if not used with caution and power tools. It’s strongly recommended you wear gloves when working with smoldering tools and ensure there’s no loose clothing that can jeopardize your safety when working with power tools.

By incorporating these safety tips, a bit of common sense and a sense of caution every time you work on your train set, you’re ensuring your railroad model hobby remains an enjoyable pastime – just as it was intended.

Model Railway Train enthusiasts usually prefer a particular railroad to collect or model. Most modelers prefer railroad whose trains they have watched as a kid before. But a more advance modeler may create his own imaginary railroad. However, it requires painting and labeling your own trains. This is not recommended for those who are just new to the hobby unless they already have a background in building, painting and decaling other scale models. Some hardcore modelers will build from scratch, and maybe even make molds so they can sell resin or white metal castings to other modelers.

Why is it important to choose your railroad? The basic reason is to reduce and limit your choices when shopping for your trains. There is a huge amount of model railroad locomotives on sale in the market these days, more specifically the HO and N scales. Deciding on your specific railroad will eventually save you money. One cannot just spend money collecting on anything that catches their eyes. You may still want to pick an exciting locomotive or unusual railroad car that does not belong to your railroad every once in a while but deciding on one railroad can save you money and storage space in the long run. The more popular your choice of railroad, the wider selection you will have.

If you have long fast express trains, it is best to have a straight track as possible, as well as large radium bends. This will make your express train look more suitable running at high speeds and will also allow to run them safer. Newer locomotive are much more powerful so they pull longer loads at higher speeds.

The hobby of collecting model railway trains is a world unto itself. There is so much to it for those who are passionate about the hobby like choosing the right train, to the layout, to the scale and scenery. And with just a bit of research, even a beginner can easily learn this amazing hobby. What is great about this is you can enjoy and pass it on to your own children and grandchildren.

Looking for a fun, engaging, and family-oriented hobby? One possibility is setting up your own home railroad with model scale trains. It?s definitely a step up from collecting Thomas the Tank Engine toys, which is where many families start with their lifelong passion for choo-choos. There are countless possibilities, from a modest circle track and single train, to an elaborate vista populated by homes, people, animals, and criss-crossing trains.

It?s easy to get started – it takes a single locomotive and a few pieces of track. Kids and adults both find it fascinating to watch trains toys traveling around, making that familiar clickety-clack. Creating your railroad is much more than just trains, and that is part of the universal appeal. If your children love horses, let them create a ranch populated with their favorite miniature horses. Build a town that looks just like your own neighborhood, and populate it with tiny versions of your friends and family. Or make a futuristic train world, with aliens and space ships too. The possibilities are endless.

While there is a definite financial outlay to buy the initial connecting pieces and model scale trains, these tend to be robust and long-lasting. The remainder of the landscape can be your own creation, using any materials at hand.

Model railroads offer a lot more than just trains. For a start, there?s the artistic aspect, whether your child likes to model with clay, build tiny houses out of toothpicks, or paint realistic trees. Every family member can contribute. And then there is the educational aspect.

Finding out about trains involves many different topics. Any vehicle enthusiast will enjoy learning about engineering and how trains move (as well as how your trains toys actually operate). There are steam trains, electric trains, coal-burning trains, and so on. Trains are also historically important, which can lead to conversations about immigration patterns, the settlement of new areas, and moving goods around. Trains are used around the world and can form the basis for looking at other countries and their transportation systems. All those geographic details that make the track interesting also introduce concepts like mountains and valleys, along with bridge construction and other practicalities.

It?s not all academic, of course. Building a model railroad involves some basic skills like hammering, sawing, and wiring. Kids love to build tiny things out of scraps of wood and other materials, which also helps develop their hand-eye coordination, imagination, and concentration. Then there?s detailed painting to be done – on a teeny-tiny scale. There is no end to what can be added, and many kids learn excellent researching skills while figuring out how to make a realistic coal mine or log cabin.

Before you envision being housebound with this hobby, consider the social possibilities. Not only are there many groups who communicate online and meet to share ideas and skills, but there are model contests and potential excursions. Some communities have larger scale trains that can carry passengers, often maintained by enthusiasts. Families enjoy trips to railroads of all sizes, from city subways to small-gauge railways, from San Francisco to Paris and Disneyland to England?s Lake District. You?ll also meet plenty of interesting people, coming from every walk of life to share in the fun of model scale trains.

So if you are looking for something to keep the family entertained and off the couch, have a look at model trains toys. You?ll find yourself in good company; many well-known faces have also shared this interest – from Tom Hanks and Frank Sinatra to Bruce Springsteen and Joe DiMaggio.

When the hobby of picking up model trains or railways is discussed most of the people like to think of those trains and tracks that are available for kids in the market. However train picking up is a particularly heavy and dear hobby maintained by thousands of folks around the globe.

The term model railroading is used to outline the practice of picking up trains and building intricate tracks for them. Model trains are small versions of real trains that have run the tracks around America and the United Kingdom.

Model trains as a hobby is the picking up of intricately made models that are regarded as having high collectable worth among model train fans. Today interested individuals will be ready to find a giant collection of trains starting from the pre-world war I time to the post-world war II trains. Generally the model trains that predate World War Two are regarded as the vintage items possessing a higher collectable worth standing.

Trains produced in that time were made out of metal and had tons of intricate detailing compared with the trains that are built today. Trains are available in a wide selection of sizes, known as scales in the sector. The Z scale as an example is used to imply the tiniest size. These trains have a tendency to be so tiny that one has to watch them from close up to appreciate the detailing. It is also rather troublesome to line up the track plans for Z scale model trains thanks to the proportion of the track to the topography. Maybe the hottest of model trains is the ho scale. These are medium-sized trains that are easy to work with and display as the have a large amount of detail, which makes them extraordinarily fascinating.

Ho scale model trains are very sought after by noobs as well as pro collectors. When hoping to buy a model train set it is vital to take the provision of space for your bench work under consideration. This is more true when it comes to setting out the model railroad track plan.

Not merely will you be in a position to find toy model trains in different scales but you will be capable of finding railroading in different styles. Among the most well liked forms of model railroad tracks are the modular, permanent, round the walls and multi-level.

If you intend to construct an abiding layout you may want to bone up on you carpentry skills. The biggest sized train set that you are going to be ready to find in the toy model train collectables is the G scale. These models are so huge that you might need to consider setting this model train track up outside. The G scale model train is known as outside model train, which is mostly set up in the garden. The G scale toy model train may make an inspiring exhibition particularly if you focus on the landscaping and track layout planning. However a full-fledge G scale model train and railroading will set you back well over a $1000. Unless you have unlimited space and better yet and unlimited budget you may want to leave the G scale toy model train for massive boys who can afford to maintain this as a pastime. There are loads of toy model train scales and gauges to collect. Visit a model train show to see them all close up and private so you’ll have a working understanding of the dimensions of each scale.

Take some time since this is a collection hobby that may last an entire life.

Over the past 100 years several methods of controlling electric model trains have developed.

The first and simplest method was the use a simple variable transformer as introduced by Lionel in 1906 to lower the Alternating Current [AC] voltage from the wall to a lower, safer value and allow the user to control the speed of a model electric train by changing the amount of AC power applied to the track. In the 1920’s, Lionel included remote control reversing switches to allow the user to control the direction of the model train.

When Direct Current [DC] powered trains with permanent magnet motors were introduced, a different standard was developed for most two rail train tracks where the direction of trains were controlled by the polarity of the DC track power applied to the track.

In the late 1940’s Lionel added a new concept of applying DC on top of the AC track voltage to turn on and off an on-board whistle by remote control. This concept of high frequency transmission was introduced in the Lionel Electronic Train Control. This system supplied ten different signals that would control ten different remote control effects. The different high frequency signals were superimposed on the standard AC power when selected buttons were pressed at the control center. Each remote engine or rail car was equipped with a receiver unit that was tuned to the individual frequencies. When the correct high frequency signal was transmitted, the corresponding receiver would toggle or turn-on some remote effect.

These high frequency signals increase the ability to remotely control various effects but they had other problems. Transmission losses were usually high and it was critically important to keep the track, the track joints and the wheels of the receiving car or locomotive extremely clean. However extra feeder wires to different parts of the track were used to prevent signal losses and placing capacitors across the track joints and adding inductors at the power supply and on each accessory being used assisted in reducing signal loss and in ensuring that all components of the model train layout operated properly. All this additional equipment however added to the cost, the complexity, and the maintenance for the model train operator.

Model train manufacturers have, over the years, introduced different methods of applying high frequency signals to the model train track to increase the remote control capabilities including independent train control which means that the operator can control the speed, direction and features of a number of different engines all on the same powered track section. With most DC and AC systems however, the biggest problem is that there are only a limited number of remote control signals possible and their application is slow by modern digital standards.

The application of digital technology uses remote control signals to carry digital signals to decoders in the engine for digital command control of locomotives and other accessories.

Digital Command Control (DCC) is a method of controlling individual engines, rail cars and accessories by transmitting digital remote control signals down the track to on-board digital receivers and decoders in the locomotives, wagons and other rolling stock and accessories.

DCC has been around since the 1970’s but had not received wide acceptance because of the limited technology at the time and the difficulty and expense of installing receivers in each engine. With developments in digital technology these problems have diminished and over the last ten to fifteen years major model train manufacturers have produced several different versions of DCC. So many that unfortunately customers have been confused about which system is best.

Fortunately, in recent times, the National Model Railroad Association [NMRA] has established a preferred method of transmitting and receiving digital transmissions on model train layouts, based on the Lenz system developed in Germany and this is recognized as the accepted standard for DCC.
